Prof. Dr. Hab. Krzysztof Szamałek – Director of the Polish Geological Institute – National Research Institute. An expert in economic geology, natural resource management, and sustainable development. He has extensive scientific, administrative, and managerial experience in raw material management, energy security, and environmental protection.
Until 2024, he served as the head of the Department of Depositional and Economic Geology at the Faculty of Geology at the University of Warsaw, where he continues his scientific and teaching activities.
From 1994–1997, 2001–2002, and 2003–2005, he held the position of Secretary and Undersecretary of State, Chief Geologist of the Country at the Ministry of Environment, where he was responsible for shaping Poland's raw material policy. From 1997–2001, he was the director of the department at the Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland, overseeing activities related to energy security, natural resource management, and crisis management.
He has also held managerial positions in both the private and public sectors – at Mostostal Warszawa, the Ekofundusz Foundation, and the Institute of Ceramics and Building Materials, where he was Deputy Director for Scientific Affairs and Scientific Secretary.
He has been involved in the work of numerous supervisory boards and advisory bodies. He served as a member of supervisory boards for companies such as KGHM Polska Miedź, Geofizyka Kraków, Petrobaltic, KGHM Metale, and Nafta Polska. He chaired the Geological Council at the Minister of Environment and the Supervisory Board of the National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW). Since 2011, he has been working on behalf of the National Centre for Research and Development as a member of the expert base development team. He was the long-time vice-chairman of the Committee for Sustainable Development of Mineral Resource Economy at the Polish Academy of Sciences. Currently, he is the chairman of the Council for Land Resource Management, established in 2024 by the Minister of Climate and Environment. He is also a member of the Scientific Committee of the Geological Sciences at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He holds the European professional title of Eurogeologist.
He is the author of approximately 300 scientific publications in the fields of economic geology, geological and mining law, and ore geology. He collaborates with international scientific institutions and journals, and his work has had a significant impact on the development of Polish geology and raw material economy.
